The Tour of Valletta Malta’s Capital City with Transportation and Entrance fees
Quick Overview
The Tour of Valletta Malta’s Capital City! - duration 4h
This tour will take you on a journey through Valetta, the capital city of Malta.
Valetta, also known as Il-Belt, is a famous World Heritage site and boasts buildings from as far back as the 16th century, when the city was under the control of the Knights Hospitaller. The city has a Baroque air, but also features beautiful mannerist, neo-classical and modern architectural elements. Walking the streets of Valetta can be likened to travelling through time, seeing all human history laid out before you, despite the heavy damage from World War II.
Valetta was declared a World Heritage Site in 1980 and, like Mdina, has had many names over the years. The name Valetta is derived from that of Jean Parisot de la Valette, who led the defence against an Ottoman invasion in 1565. During the tenure of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, or Knights Hospitaller, the city was called Humilissima Civitas Valetta, or the Most Humble City of Valetta, occasionally shortened to Citta’Umilissima.
The spectacular nature of the city’s architecture, from the bastions and curtain walls to the gardens and palaces, led some to name the city Superbissima, or Most Proud.
This tour will take you through the busy streets and Barracca Gardens to an arresting view of the Grand Harbour. From there, you will proceed to St. John’s Co-Cathedral, built in the 16th century by the Knights Hospitaller. Here you will be given the opportunity to view the masterwork ‘The Beheading of St. John the Baptist’ by Caravaggio, and to watch the ‘Malta Experience Show’ for more information about Malta’s rich and fascinating heritage.
