The Second World War in Malta and Its British History with Transportation and Entrance fees

Quick Overview

The Second World War in Malta & Its British History (1798-1979) - duration 8h
This tour is unique in that it is the only tour dedicated to the history of the British in Malta. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the whys, how’s, and wherefores of the British occupation, as well as Malta’s pivotal role in World War II.
The tour will start in Vittoriosa, where you will be able to see fortifications dating back to the time of the Knights Hospitaller, which were later used by the British in World War II.
You will be able to visit the labyrinthine air raid shelters and learn more about what is called the Second Great Siege of Malta – the first having been the 16th-century push by the Ottoman Empire to take the island from the Knights Hospitaller. The air raid shelters were excavated from solid rock and expanded gradually as the war continued, until they reached the massive scale you see today.
After a stroll in Vittoriosa, you will journey by bus to Valetta. Here, you will proceed by foot to the Barraka Garden with a view of the Grand Harbour – the largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean Sea. The harbour is a former British military base, and its strategic value was among the reasons Malta was attacked during World War II.
From there, you will pass Napoleon Bonaparte’s Palace, the Second World War Victory Kitchen, the statue of Queen Victoria. You will also see the ruins of the Royal Opera House, which was destroyed during the Malta bombings.
After lunch, you will walk to the Malta War Museum. The Museum is housed at Fort St. Elmo, another fortification from the time of the Knights which was adapted to be used in modern warfare. Among the exhibits here you will find the fuselage of a Gloster Gladiator and an E-Boat, a form of human torpedo.
