Five day Bilbao and Pais Vasco tour
1st Day (Tue.) BILBAO
Meet at the airport for assistance and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day as you wish, resting or exploring the area, before returning to your hotel accommodation.
2nd Day (Wed.) BILBAO –SANCTUARY OF LOYOLA – SAN SEBASTIAN
Have breakfast in your hotel as usual. Depart at 09:00 a.m. and drive eastwards to the province of Gipuzkoa, where you will pass through Eibar, Elgoibar, and Azkoitia before you reach the famous Sanctuary of Loyola. Visit the shrine of Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, which was built in the 17th-18th centuries. Continue on via Azpeitia, to the coast by Zumaia, until you reach Getaria, birthplace of Juan Sebastian Elcano with its arch Catrapona, the gothic-style Parish Church of San Salvador (15th century.), a small fishing port and village. Afterwards, continue through Zarautz, which has been a mecca for tourists since the 19th century. Its 2500 meters long beach is truly magnificent, the longest beach in Puzkoa. Take some time to visit the old town with its picturesque streets and cosmopolitan ambiance. Go on to San Sebastian for a panoramic City Tour including the Kursaal Palace, and Monte Igueldo with magnificent views of the city, etc. Enjoy some free time and find a nice place for lunch. Suitably refreshed, continue with a fascinating walking tour through the historic old part of the city, including the harbour, the Dominican Convent (16th century) the Basilica of Santa Maria de Coro (18th century) and the Constitution Square. Head back to your hotel for some well-deserved rest and recuperation.
3rd Day (Thu.) SAN SEBASTIAN – LA RIOJA ALAVESA – VITORIA
After breakfast at the hotel, travel southward towards Vitoria via Lasarte, Andoain and Villabona municipalities to encounter some historic, artistic and archaeological features. Continue via Tolosa and Ordizia, typical villages of Goierri area and make your way through Beasain, Ormaiztegi, Zumarraga until you arrival at Oñati, the most elegant village in the whole Gipuzkoa province. After viewing some of the monuments, follow a road with magnificent views over cliffs to reach the most important Sanctuary of Gipuzkoa, the Shrine of Our Lady of Arantzazu. This place offers a compendium of the best contemporary Basque art, by the Franciscan order. Continue your journey until you reach the Rioja Alavesa area. Go through Labastida to Laguardia, which is famous for its architecture and also its wineries. Enjoy some free time to explore the town and find a nice place to have lunch. After that, head for Vitoria, capital of the Basque Country, with its rich cultural heritage. Sit back and enjoy a panoramic City Tour, viewing the well-preserved medieval Old Town, which has been given Monumental Complex status thanks to its gothic design and narrow streets, as well as many impressive medieval and renaissance buildings. Don't forget the Artium Museum (entrance ticket included), the Cathedral of Santa Maria, and the church of the White Virgin, or “Casco Viejo"". The rest of the day is free so that you can explore the centre and the old quarter of the city before returning to your hotel accommodation.
4th Day (Fri.) VITORIA – BILBAO
After breakfast in your hotel, go to Salinas de Añana, one of the most surprising corners of the Basque Country. Take a fascinating guided tour of the facility to learn the history, architecture, archeology and biodiversity of the salt pans. Follow the ancient route to Orduña, and start a guided visit of this historic village. Continue on through the Valley of Ayala to arrive in Balmaseda were you can stretch your legs on an interesting walk. Enjoy some free time for lunch and afterwards, follow the route through the mining area of Bizkaia to reach the coastal towns of Santurtzi and Portugalete. From here, cross over the Transporter Bridge Bizkaia (designated a world heritage site by UNESCO) to reach Getxo and then finish back in Bilbao. From there, do some more sightseeing including a trip up to the Artxanda Mountain followed by a gentle walking tour around the Old Quarter. Entrance to the world famous Guggenheim Museum is included, with its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Wander freely around the museum, (a guide is not included, just the entrance fee). A guide will provide comprehensive information of all available activities,museums, culture, folklore and social or sporting events taking place in Bilbao. Go back to your hotel at the end of a busy day.
5th Day (Sat.) BILBAO
Enjoy one last breakfast in your hotel and then you will be taken to the airport.
