Montserrat & Santa Cecilia Church, Official Guide and Transportation
Montserrat & Santa Cecilia Church Small Group Tour - duration 7h
Discover two of the most mystic Catalan wonders on our full day tour.
Experience an early, uncrowded visit to the magnificent Montserrat Mountain & Sanctuary followed by an unforgettable visit with brunch to the hidden treasure, the “Santa Cecilia Church.” There you will marvel at one of the most outstanding sites in the world, renowned for the way it blends Christianity with elements of avant-garde art.
Start your day trip from Barcelona in a comfortable luxury micro-bus which will whisky you to the mountain of Montserrat, which rises majestically to 4,051 feet (1,236 metres). The Montserrat rocks were formed from natural sand cement over many centuries. Wind and rain have given the mountain strange and varied shapes. Take a look at the strange forms, and see if you can imagine human and animal shapes in some of these peaks. Many of them have popular names or have sparked fantastic legends to explain their bizarre origins. This trip to Montserrat gives you the chance to enjoy the wonderful and breath-taking views of Montserrat Mountain, a true wonder of the natural world.
Enjoy an early visit to the Montserrat Royal Basilica before the crowds set in.
This Sanctuary houses the famous 12th century Romanesque Verge Moreneta carving (the Black Madonna). From a distance you will be able to see this famous statue of the Black Madonna. The Montserrat Benedictine sanctuary was built in 1025 and furnishes a mystical backdrop to the shrine of Catalonia's patron saint, the Virgin of Montserrat, in the monastery's Royal Basilica. From that time onwards, the little monastery has attracted pilgrims and visitors, keen to pay their respects. Over the centuries it has gained a reputation for miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin. Today, Montserrat has been modernized to meet the needs of modern pilgrims who stillmake their way here, a thousand years after its original founding.
You will have some free time to visit the audio-visual exhibition of the history and creation of Montserrat. Try some typical Montserrat liquors.
After the visit you will be taken to Montserrat's hidden treasure, the ancient Santa Cecilia de Montserrat monastery. Feel at ease in this privileged and tranquil place on a natural terrace that offers spectacular views. On clear days you can see the emblematic cliffs of Montserrat, the valleys and even the distant Pyrenees.
Enjoy an audio- guided visit to one of the most outstanding examples of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture in the region. The Church's heritage has been carefully preserved over the centuries. This is a quality that the well-known Irish painter, SEAN SCULLY, ably reflects in his artistic contribution to the intereior, through his exceptional melange of painted and stained glass. Scully's work makes Santa Cecilia one of the most outstanding sites in the world because of its incredible fusion of Christianity and avant-garde art. You cannot fail to appreciate and feel history, art and spirituality in close contact with the natural beauty of Montserrat itself.
