Gozo with a Difference - duration 8h
While Gozo and Malta may be sister islands, the two are worlds apart. While Malta revels in its rich history, Gozo presents a more natural environment, rich in dense vegetation and offering unmatched photo opportunities.
Your first stop will be Ggantija, a Neolithic megalith site. While the true purpose of megalithic monuments has been lost to history, many believe that these sites were once temples. The megaliths at Ggantija are the oldest of the Maltese megalith sites – older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt at roughly 5550 years and are believed to be the world’s second-oldest manmade religious structures, with only Gobleki Tepe being older.
Once you have been able to properly appreciate the skills of ancient man, you will drive to Marsalforn to board the trackless train. On your 40-minute journey you will pass Marsalforn Bay, Qbajjar Bay, Xwejni Bay, the Salt Pans, and many other sites of interest. This journey is a rare opportunity, as no vehicles aside from the trackless train are permitted in the area.
You will also have the opportunity to visit the local craft shop and sample local food while you browse the stunning local crafts. The local artists make use of stone, marble, and local lace in their work, and the craft shop is a great place to stop for a souvenir of your trip.
After the craft shop, your journey will take you to Dwejra Bay, where you will be able to view the Inland Sea and Il-Gebla tal-General, and take a short boat ride if the weather permits.
Next up you will have the opportunity to visit Victoria, the capital city of Gozo. In the heart of the city, you will be able to view the Cittadella, first fortified in the Bronze Age. Although the site has been active since prehistory, initial developments are credited to the Phoenicians, while the Romans are given credit for transforming the ancient site into a proper Roman military fortress.
You will be served a late lunch at a restaurant in Rabat, before returning to Malta by ferry, richer in experience and knowledge.
