Knossos is the most visited place of Crete. It contains the largest of the Minoan palaces has been partially restored. Excavated in the early 20th century by the great English archaeologist Arthur Evans, who has discovered the first of the great European civilizations, starting 5800 years ago. The ruins and rebuilt parts belong to the last and largest Minoan palace, the labyrinth of Knossos. Built 3700 years ago, is over 1000 pieces with an area of 22,000 m2. This palace was even a health system and was decorated with impressive murals.The throne of King Minos is still intact. The cause of his destruction is disputed, but the eruption of Santorini was certainly bad for Minoan Crete.
Following this historic site, you continue to the Cretan Thematic Park of Archanes. While you enjoy a meze, based on the gastronomic glory of the Minoan civilization. You will be taken back in history with a Minoan dance & theatre performance and also with a 3D film which presents the history of the making of Knossos from 7000 till 1100 BC. The centre of Heraklion is only a short drive away.
The guide will accompany you for a walk through the streets of Daedalos from the site of the Fountain of Lions, the Loggia and the Church of Titus. Then you have free time to explore the city yourself or for shopping. Heraklion is the largest urban center of Crete, the capital of the region of Crete and the economic center of the island. During the Minoan period the town of Heraklion served as a port to Knossos. Currently it’s population is approximately 160.000.
Since the Minoan period the town of Heraklion became the host of varied cultures and civilizations whose indelible marks are visible in the form of fountains, castles, walls, palaces, and other monuments. Heraklion is a heaven for architects and historians, as well as a cosmopolitan town, particularly during the summer period when thousands of visitors can be seen shopping in the market or visiting the museums. ID is always needed in order to get the reductions, also at entrance of Knossos.
There is no storage rooms for bags and backpacks at Knossos
