Ostia was the 1st Roman colony, and acquired a commercial function to supply Rome with food, especially wheat.
Far from the hustle and bustle of central Rome, Ostia Antica offers splendid examples of Roman frescoes and mosaics. Learn how Ostia became more autonomous towards the end of the Roman Republic, when the city was surrounded by a new circle of walls, traditionally attributed to the time of Sulla.
