Nisyros, The volcanic island
Quick Overview
The small island to the south of Kos, Nisyros, has been created by several volcanic eruptions that started 160.000 years ago. The center of Nisyros is dominated by a huge volcanic valley (a caldera). Its diameter is about 4km, which makes it the biggest caldera in Europe. The enormous crater in the valley is very fascinating. You can descend into the crater and admire the beautiful yellow sulphur crystal created by the sulphurous steam that escapes from holes in the bottom. After visiting the volcano, you will get free time in Mandraki, in order to do some shopping, wander around and have lunch or to visit the Monastery of Panagia Spyliani (optional) On the outskirts of Mandraki, are the renowned healing springs of Nisyros, ideal for curing chronic rheumatic conditions. Attractive villages such as Emporios, Nikia and Pali are on the list of interest. The island is also rich in flora and fauna with an extraordinary variety of trees, pistachio trees, oak trees, olive trees, fig trees and almond tree (from the almonds they produce the local soumada syrup) and at least 30 species of wild birds and a variety of endemic birds.
